The Lonely Whale

Shreya Sahai Bhatnagar

Girl and Whale Anime

“A friend? A family?”, the whale asks himself,

He scoffs, “More like an enemy.”

And so, he sets to find them,

The one who he longs for.

He wishes he wasn’t so hesitant,

Or so desperate.

But what can he do?

When that’s who he is.

When that’s how he grew,

Wandering through the oceans.

So, he sets by himself,

To achieve his only dream.

To find his own gold,

His own treasure.

He searches and searches,

Under the caves.

Over the water,

Searching in the skies too.

In this journey,

He feels so distant.

He’s sore all over,

And he can't swim anymore.

“Not as easy as I thought”.

He stops to take rest,

Searching all day, yes, he’s determined.

But soon the night takes over,

Guiding him through the choppy water.

“It’s shiny”,

“It’s beautiful”.

Without realizing,

He looks up at the stars.

The darkness which he thinks about,

Would be his lifelong buddy.

Little does he know,

His dream has already been achieved.

It was right in front of his eyes,

Yet he couldn’t see it.

He starts to sing,

To the stars.

He sings to the moon too,

With all his heart.

Wishing for a friend,

“A small one would do”.

He sings so desperately,

With all his heart.

Miles away,

He’s heard.

By someone very different from him,

Someone who’s too small for him.

Someone who needs love too,

Who sympathizes with him.

He feels it,

The weeping,

The pain,

The sorrow.

Just that connection is enough,

Because he sets on a new journey,

To find the source that makes him feel so.

And this time, he isn’t afraid,

Because one day,

He won’t be alone,

He will never be alone.

The power of the waves,

The bright moon amidst the dark cloudy sky,

The stars,

The wind,

They’re all guiding him through.

Making sure he keeps up,

And reaches his destination,

Which may be far away,

But the connection grows stronger with every stroke.
